Explore Lanzarote’s caves, These two attractions are different parts of the biggest section of lava tunnel in the world.

As you leave the sunshine behind to descend into the entrance of the Cueva de los Verdes, you feel that you are going down into another world. In a guided tour of around one hour, you will discover the unusual shapes the lava set into and the secrets hidden below the surface in these caves, where local people took refuge in the distant past from pirate attacks and bad weather.

You can also buy tickets for evening concerts in the cave, where the acoustics resonate off every surface, enchanting the audience as moonlight creeps in overhead.

On the other side of the road you will find Los Jameos del Agua, an open ended section of tunnel carved by Lanzarote’s volcanic flows, inhabited by miniature albino crabs.

You will also find a garden of palm trees with an artificial lake created by the artist Cesar Manrique, and a museum devoted to volcanoes which provides several interactive activities.

Situated on the edge of the lavafields and covered with coarse black volcanic ash, the vineyards of La Geria look like they have been transported here from another planet.

The locals found a unique way of cultivating vines on this hostile looking terrain. They dug over 10,000 funnel-shaped hollows in the thick layers of picón (coarse volcanic ash), planted one vine per hollow, filled them with soil and poured thick layers of picón over the top. The porous volcanic rock absorbes the nightime dew to feed the plants. To protect them from the constant winds, they built low, semicircular walls around them known as zocos, which help give the landscape its otherworldly feel.

The area produces the majority of Lanzarote’s excellent wines, 75% of which are made from the Malvasía grape, one of the oldest known varieties.

Wines can be sampled and bought from many of the local bodegas found in the region, some of which also offer tours showing the process in more detail.

If you want to arrange a trip and learn more about the process, Lanzarote Wine Tours are the experts, and can arrange the perfect excursion for you.
